Preparing your mark image

The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) requires that a drawing file of your mark submitted with your trademark application must follow specific guidelines.

When preparing your mark image, keep in mind instructions provided by the USPTO. The mark image must be in JPG format and file size no larger than 5 MB.  The mark must have a filename, less than 256 characters long, inclusive of the “.jpg” extension and the file may not be zipped or compressed separately.  The trademark (TM), service mark (SM), or registration symbols (®) may not be included in the image.  In addition, the mark image should contain a minimum of white space around the design and should be in black and white or grayscale, should color not be a feature of the mark.  If color is being claimed as a feature of the mark, RGB color scheme must be used.

The USPTO recommends the image be created and submitted electronically in order to ensure high-quality. However, should your image need to be scanned, make sure to scan at high resolution and with a high-quality original. A clear mark image is important as the image submitted will be printed on your trademark’s registration certificate.
